John Duval Wines

John Duval is a legendary name. As only the third winemaker to be entrusted with managing the production of Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange, John worked for Penfolds for 28 years (including 16 years as chief winemaker) until his departure in 2002.

Despite his legendary status, John is a quiet, unassuming man who just happens to be one of the world’s great winemakers. He set out on his own with the 2003 vintage, sourcing fruit from some long-time friends in the Barossa. His Entity Shiraz and Plexus, a Rhône blend, have quickly established the reputation of John’s label.

2006 Plexus

2006 Plexus @ £184.00 per case - Buy Now

Plexus is a blend of the varieties that excel in the Barossa – with the 2006 a blend of 52% Shiraz, 30% Grenache and 18% Mourvèdre. The Shiraz, sourced from vineyards in the Stockwell, Light Pass and Krondorf regions, gives the wine lovely weight and depth. The Grenache is from 50 to 60 year old bush vines in Roland Flat, and gives the wine great aromatics along with softness and richness on the palate, while the Mourvèdre, from old bush vines from the Light Pass and Krondorf regions (the oldest over a 100 years old) lends the wine a spicy character and good tannic structure. The wine was aged in oak for 16 months, but the amount of new wood was quite low at about 17% of the total.

95 Points James Halliday 2009 Australian Wine Companion
"A beautifully balanced and utterly seamless array of red and black fruits, without a scintilla of confection character; lovely now or in 10 years. Bargain."

95 Points Jay Miller (Wine advocate Feb 2009) “The 2006 Plexus is composed of 52% Shiraz, 30% Grenache, and 18% Mourvedre. Purple-colored, it offers up an exotic concoction of underbrush, violets, leather, black cherry, and blueberry pie. On the palate, this sexy effort is opulent, succulent, incipiently complex, and altogether hedonistic. It should perform well for a decade. In the scheme of things, it is also a terrific value.”

2006 Plexus is also available In Bond @ £165.00 per case
and is available under both stelvin and cork.

2006 Entity

2006 Entity @ £204.00 per case - Buy Now

Entity is sourced from old Shiraz vineyards from the Stockwell, Light Pass, Ebenezer and Krondorf regions in the north and east of the Barossa Valley. It is fermented with submerged cap in both traditional old open tanks and small stainless steel fermenters. The wine was aged in barrel for about 18 months, with 30% in new fine grain French oak, and the balance in 2, 3 and 4 year old French and American oak hogsheads (300 litres). Some batches were barrel fermented. This varied approach has resulted in a wine of great complexity, as one would expect from John.

The 2006 Entity won the Barossa Valley Red Trophy at the 2008 International Wine Challenge & Gold in the International Wine Challenge, London, 2008.

96 Points James Halliday 2009 Australian Wine Companion
"Has achieved the density of fruit to guarantee a 30-year life without the least hint of overripe fruit or alcohol heat; perfect balance and integration of fruit, oak and tannins, the work of a master."

2006 Entity is also available In Bond @ £185.00 per case. and is available under both stelvin and cork.
